Burj 2 Burj Half Marathon 2026: Kipkorir and Cheptai Lead Elite Field in Dubai
Dubai’s streets will once again host some of the world’s fastest road runners as the Burj 2 Burj Half Marathon returns on Sunday, February 8, 2026. Known for its fast, flat layout and early-season prestige, the race draws a compact but highly competitive elite field, promising tactical battles, speed, and early statements for the 2026 road-running season.
Men’s Race: Kipkorir Favoured to Lead from the Front
Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir enters the race as the man to beat. With a field-leading personal best of 58:23, he is widely expected to dictate the pace and control proceedings from the front. Kipkorir’s strength lies in his ability to maintain a consistent, high-speed rhythm over flat courses—a skill that aligns perfectly with Dubai’s fast layout.
His biggest threat comes from Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, who carries a 59:21 half marathon best alongside an illustrious track career, including multiple world titles. While still adapting to road racing, Cheptegei’s combination of speed and tactical awareness makes him a serious contender in any race that tests endurance and finishing strategy.
Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu (60:03) is expected to be a key figure if the early pace becomes unsustainable. Simbu thrives in hard, honest races, and his experience could allow him to capitalise if the favourites tire. Completing the men’s elite field are Enock Kipruto (Kenya) and Richard Ringer (Germany), both boasting 60:51 personal bests, providing depth and European resistance.
Women’s Race: Cheptai Set to Dominate
Kenya’s Irine Cheptai is the standout in the women’s field. Her personal best of 64:53 positions her as the pre-race favourite, and her consistency at elite level makes her capable of controlling the pace from early on.
Romania’s Joan Melly (65:04) is poised as the main challenger, likely to employ patience and finishing strength if the race remains compact. Ethiopia’s Ftaw Zeray (66:04) brings depth and resilience, while Kenya’s Jackline Cherono (67:16) completes a field that promises a tactical and closely contested podium battle.
What to Expect
Dubai’s course, with its long, straight sections and mild early-morning conditions, favors front-running athletes and fast times. The Burj 2 Burj is more than a race—it is an opportunity for elite runners to test their early-season fitness, stake their claims on the global circuit, and set the tone for upcoming international races.
While Kipkorir and Cheptai enter as favourites, their rivals’ experience and tactical nous ensure the outcomes will not be determined on reputation alone. Early surges, mid-race positioning, and finishing strength could all play decisive roles in both races, making this one of the most anticipated half marathons of the year.
