Balachew and Eshete Triumph in Tactical Classic at the 30th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon

In the early hours of Sunday, a crisp breeze swept through the city’s high-rises as more than 70,000 participants gathered for the 30th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label road race combining elite competition, urban drama, and global running culture.
Balachew’s Decisive Surge
Ethiopia’s Bizuneh Balachew stamped his authority on the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 2:09:39, narrowly fending off Kenya’s Silas Too (2:09:56) and Francis Kipkorir (2:09:59). The early stages saw a tightly packed lead group, with Kenyans and Ethiopians matching strides through 25 km. The decisive moment arrived around 30 km, when Balachew launched a perfectly timed surge that created just enough separation to secure victory.
“It was difficult,” Balachew said post-race. “About 30 kilometres, I got a little gap and then I paced and broke away because I still had energy. I love Hong Kong every time.”
The top 10 men ran impressively close times: Douglass Kimeli (2:10:17), Edwin Koech (2:10:24), Han Ii Ryong (2:10:39, PRK), Kiprono Kipkemoi (2:10:53), and Gebre Ayenew (2:11:07) all demonstrated remarkable depth and resilience. Balachew’s victory adds another chapter to his career, which includes a personal best of 2:06:30 from Berlin 2024, and reflects both strategic mastery and elite endurance on one of Asia’s most challenging urban courses.
Eshete’s Perfect Timing

On the women’s side, Bahrain’s Shitaye Eshete Habte executed a near-flawless race to claim victory in 2:29:03, narrowly outpacing Ethiopia’s Tesfay Haftu (2:29:13) and Kenya’s Linet Masai (2:29:23). Eshete’s veteran experience, with a marathon PB of 2:20 from Hamburg 2025 and a decorated track history, allowed her to remain composed through mid-race surges before launching her decisive push in the final kilometres.
“This course is tricky with rolling terrain and wind, but I knew my timing,” Eshete said. “I stayed calm and waited for the moment to make my move, and it worked perfectly.”
Rounding out the women’s top 10 were Adilo Kesir (2:30:00), Caroline Kilel (2:30:44), Geremew Workenesh (2:31:08), and North Korea’s Jon Su Gyong (2:32:30) and Pak Sol Gyong (2:35:33), highlighting the race’s international flavor. The battle among the leaders was tactical, with every kilometre counting as athletes navigated Hong Kong’s demanding streets, bridges, and tunnels.
Hong Kong Marathon: Challenge and Celebration
The Hong Kong Marathon course tests both elite and amateur runners. Beginning in Tsim Sha Tsui, it winds through the Western Harbour tunnels, across Stonecutters and Ting Kau Bridges, and finishes in Victoria Park. Rolling terrain, sudden elevation changes, and occasional coastal winds reward strategic pacing over sheer speed, making victories for Balachew and Eshete as much about mental acuity as physical endurance.
Beyond the elite competition, the streets were alive with tens of thousands of runners, local and international, completing full, half, and 10 km races. Local residents like Wong Yin-chun and Law Ying-ting delivered notable performances, while recreational runners filled the city with energy and excitement. The event also attracted cultural moments, with spectators cheering and music echoing through the streets, cementing Hong Kong’s marathon as a festival as well as a championship.
This 30th edition marks three decades of growth and prestige. From its inaugural race in 1997 to a World Athletics Gold Label event, the Hong Kong Marathon has evolved into a global spectacle, combining elite athletics, international participation, and citywide celebration.
